After finding a love letter among her father’s possession four years after he mysteriously disappeared, Julia Win follows him to the small town of Kalaw, Burma. On old man approaches her, promising to tell her the story of her father’s life before he came to New York and met her mother. As a child, Tin Win was abandoned by his mother, who was told by an astrologer that the boy was cursed. At age 10, Tin Win gradually went blind. Taken in by the local monastery, he met Mi Mi, a girl with crippled legs. Their friendship turned to love, but their happiness was brief. Julia gains new understanding of her father and begins to understand herself.
